Gary Anandasangaree is a human rights activist and lawyer. Over the course of the last twenty years, Gary has been a strong advocate for youth, refugee and recent immigrant communities. With legal advocacy, community engagement, and mediation as tools – he continues to contribute positively to breaking barriers and strengthening communities. Gary has been a strong advocate on international human rights issues, regularly representing Lawyers Rights Watch Canada at the United Nations. As a passionate advocate for youth and their right to education, he regularly intervenes in cases of student expulsions and suspensions under the Ontario Safe Schools Act that has supported hundreds of students overcome personal and academic barriers.
Gary has played leadership roles within several organizations. He was Chair of the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre (CanTYD), President of the Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce, Counsel to the Canadian Tamil Congress, Legal Counsel to the IMBA (Independent Mortgage Brokers and Agents), Board member of the Youth Challenge Fund, Member of the Toronto Police Chief’s Advisory Board, and Member of the United Way Newcomers Grant Program.
He is the recipient of the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals. Gary is married to Harini Sivalingam. They have two daughters, Bairavi, and Sahanah.
