Joining the Virtual Federal Liberal Caucus Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month celebration online, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared his message of hope for COVID-19 and his gratitude to essential and front-line workers. On the note of hope Trudeau spoke about the historical moment of Kamala Harris being sworn in as vice president of the United States. Prime minister also spoke about the destruction of the Mullivaikal memorial and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to bringing accountability in Sri Lanka.
“We must reflect on and honor the past. For this community, that includes remembering those who were lost during the armed conflict in Sri Lanka. I know the destruction of the Mullivaikal memorial at the University of Jaffna hit hard for many Tamil Canadians. We’ve heard that the monument will be rebuilt. That’s encouraging news because peace in Sri Lanka cannot be achieved without accountability. Canada remains commited to seeking reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka. We will continue to work with our partners in the core group of the UN Human Rights council to help achieve lasting peace and stability.”
