Toronto, Canada – 10:53 am – Tuesday September 15th, 2020

In October 2018, the Canadian Tamil Congress (the “CTC”), and its former National Spokesperson Mr. David Poopalapillai commenced a lawsuit in the Ontario Superior Court against Mr. Parthipan Rajendran, also known as Thipan Raj.
The lawsuit related to false and defamatory Facebook posts published by Mr. Rajendran in and around August 2018 accusing Mr. David Poopalapillai of sexual misconduct. Mr. Rajendran also falsely accused that the CTC was complicit in this alleged wrongdoing in that its board and executive had attempted to cover up the alleged incident.

The matter has now been resolved with Mr. Rajendran providing a signed retraction and apology for these false and defamatory statements, plus a sum of money which shall remain undisclosed. Mr. Rajendran also apologized in writing for the hurt and damage suffered by Mr. Poopalapillai, his family and the CTC because of these false statements.
The CTC and Mr. Poopalapillai now consider the matter closed. They extend their most sincere thanks to their many supporters and well-wishers for their support during this difficult period.  They would also like to acknowledge the invaluable support of their counsel, Mark Donald of Mark Donald Law.

Danton Thurairajah said “These types of fabricated attacks practice on social media should come to an end. The organization had hired an independent investigation firm to conduct an investigation. CTC encourages victims of sexual abuse to report incidents to law enforcement agencies. The false accusations was to tarnish the reputation of Mr. Poopalapillai and the organization.”
